Madeira II - Moving around...

Hi again dear northterracists

Here go some more photos of the days spent in Madeira. The theme here is the ways we used to move around in and between islands. If you wish to see more pictures please link to my Portuguese blog.

(In Porto Santo we travelled around by bike. Lu behaved much better when going down than when pedalling upwards ;) Anyway Lance Armstrong would be proud of us)

(Boat we travelled in on the trip between Madeira and Porto Santo. We were both quite sea sick during the trip, damn waves!!)

(Cable car that connects the downtown of Funchal with the top of the hill. Too much wind and balancing for my taste! I thought I would end up down in the middle of banana plantations or the garden of a private house...)

(One of the most typical experiences of the island: going down hill at high speed inside this kind of basket-car. The guy's job is to keep the car on the road and not let it turn around. Quite funny!!)

Nuno, again, I enjoyed your comical pictures but where is a photo of Madeira cheese? I am curious about what kind of cheese people in Madeira make.
I believe there will be some more touristic posts in next few years. There will be a statue of Cristiano Ronaldo in the center of Funcial and the museum of Ronaldo will be the most visited place in Madeira. Don't you think?
In last two games, he scored wonderful goals, 4 goals in two games. Amazing!

Hi Yasu,

There is almost no livestock production in Madeira, so no traditional cheeses of relevance. Madeira was always an island predominantly used by Portugal for plant products (grapes/wine, fruits, cereals...), while the Azores archipelago (Pauleta-land) had always a very important dairy cow production due to the green pastures (therefore your much loved red skin cheese, known as "terra nostra"). Madeira is an extremely montanous and harsh relief island, it was not easy to leave there in the past. Sheep or goats were never very used in the islands.

Ronaldo is definetly a hero there, his shirts are for sale everywhere. I hope his form improves until next June...
