Nuno or Yasu? (HELP!)
Dear Nuno and Yasu,
I got a Spanish question here but should be a piece of cake for you.
"Alfonso Felipe Velasquez Tuesta" is the name of the former Minister of Production who will visit us next week. Can you tell me
1. Which part of his name exactly is his SURNAME?
2. How should I pronounce his name?

I think you should call him mr. Velasquez (also because Tuesta is an ugly name).
Reads "Vê-lásh-quésh".

He's a Peruvian. So should be speaking Spanish, right?
Why Tuesta is ugly?
Official language in Peru is Spanish.
It's funny that the name of the country actually means "Turkey" (the bird) in Portuguese (and in spanish also I think). Therefore there are two bird countries in the world: Peru and Turkey :)
Velasquez (also the name of a very famous spanish painter) should be the surname inherited from his father, and Tuesta from his mother. In latin countries you should be called by your father's surname.
Tuesta just sounds ugly to me, I don't know how to explain better. But it's better you don't tell this to the guy!

Nuno is right. You should address him as Senhor/Mr Velasquez.
In Spanish speaking countries, they normally shorten their name and only use First name and First Surname. In his case, Alfonso Velasquez. Pronaunced as "Belasketh" . In Spanish, there is no V sound. They pronounce v and b in the same way.
I give you a little lesson here. You should salute him: Hola, buenos dias (or buenos tardes), senhor Velasquez. Me llamo Linda. Mucho gusto. (Hi good morning (or good afternoon, Mr... My name is Linda. How do you do.)
pronaunciation: ola buenos dias senyoor Belasketh me liyamo Linda Muucho gusto.
Latin Americans tend to be more informal than Spanish.

This barbarian language can be tricky, it seems... :)
So here goes some reaction to Yasu's comments:
1- B or V?
I'm sure Yasu is correct about the fact that the Spanish people from Spain always vocalize V's as B's. I'm not so sure if south americans, particularly Peruvians, do the same. Gennerally I think south americans,as well as brazilians, speak spanish and portuguese in a much more open way than Iberian people - meaning they open their mouth more and they pronounce/say the words in a more clear way (that's why it's easier for foreigners to learn these languages with south american professors). For example, if you hear an argentinian from Buenos Aires speaking you can understand it much better than somebody from Madrid, they use less gutural or throat sounds as well as the "th" sounds (you have to bite your tongue to say it) making speaking more clear and close to how spanish is written. Peruvians I honestly don't know, but I think somebody from Chile or Argentina would say the V's and not the B's as the typical barbarian spanish ;) By the way, did you see the great movie about the voyage of Che Guevara through south america as a youngster, called "Motorcycle diaries"? It's great, the main actor is quite good!
2-Be/Ve or Bé/Vé?
The "e" should not be said in the english way (it would sound "bee") but in an open way, "bé" like a sheep would say!
3- sh?
Yasu is also right about the "sh" sound, it's probably the portuguese too civilized way to speak spanish
4- In conclusion, the way I think it is the most correct for a Peruvian would be:
"Vé-láss-késs"
I suppose Yasu would say
"Bé-láss-keth"
5- The phrase Yasu told you will result very well for sure! Mucho gusto sounds quite good!
So Linda tell us after you meet the guy how did it go, and how did the guy respond to your knowledgeable approach!

I am so overwhelmed! Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. I think I'll take Yasu's pronuncitaion coz don't know how to read Nuno's version. :P
