Kyoto "Gastronomic Capital" 5: Tofu Fast Food (豆腐のファーストフード)
"Tofu" is one of the foods considered to be healthy and it has become popular among health conscious consumers in Europe. If you drop by a organic or healthy food grocery stores, you may find packs of "Tofu" on shelves. Tofu is originated in China and it was brought to our countries more than one thousand years ago.
Tofu is made from soybean milk which is extracted from the beans. The process of making tofu is quite similar to cheese. We, Japanese use raw Tofu (豆腐) for miso soup (味噌汁) and we eat it in raw with a dash of "soy sauce". The other way to cook is to "fry". "Deep fried Tofu" has its own name, "O-age (お揚げ)" for thin one and thick square Tofu coated with flour is called "Agedasi Dofu (揚げだし豆腐)".
This time, I introduce some "Deep fried Tofu" fast food to you. We droped by this fast food shop after visiting "Ginkakuji-temple". If you get off a bus at the Ginkakuji Michi (銀閣寺道). There is a street which leads to the temple. If you walk a few minites, you will find the shop on the right.
They serve wrapped "Sushi rice" with the deep fried Tofu. It is quite nice.
I'm sure Western vegetarians like it. The owner of this shop is a long established "Tofu" maker. The man at the shop was very friendly and explained us about their product.
